Overview

After the bloody Christian capture of Jerusalem in 1099, Godfrey of Bouillon and then Baldwin I established the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Holy Sepulchre was rebuilt as the spiritual heart of a Latin enclave surrounded by Muslim powers.

Historical Context

The Crusades were a series of religious wars launched by western European Christians from 1096 onwards. The Latin states they founded survived in fragments for nearly two centuries.

  • Crusader knights in surcoats with red crosses.
  • The dome of the Holy Sepulchre under reconstruction.
  • Local Christians, Muslims, and Jews still living in their quarters.
