Overview
Nalanda was a Mahavihara — a great Buddhist monastery and centre of learning — that during the Gupta era housed thousands of monks studying medicine, mathematics, logic, astronomy, and Buddhism alongside.
Historical Context
The Gupta Empire (320-550 AD) is often called India's "Classical Age" — a time of advances in mathematics (zero, decimal system), astronomy, and Sanskrit literature. Nalanda would later host the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang.
