ClassicalReligion700 ADTikalmedium

Overview

Tikal in the Late Classic period was one of the largest cities in the Americas, with stepped pyramids reaching 65 metres above the rainforest. Around 700 AD it was at the height of its power under kings like Jasaw Chan K'awiil.

Historical Context

The Classic Maya developed sophisticated calendars, hieroglyphic writing, and astronomy. Tikal was a major political power but, like many Maya cities, would be largely abandoned by 900 AD for reasons still debated.
